The story so far

Max Biaggi (Alitalia Aprilia) was the King of Portimao after the second round. The Italian won both races for the first time ever in his distinguished career in front of 77,000 fans. Britain's Leon Haslam (Alstare Suzuki) ran him close in both races with the gap between them around two tenths of a second.

Perhaps a portent of what is looking like a classic season of World Superbikes to come, there were four different manufacturers filling the first four places in each race. What was also very intereting was the race times. These two races were 16 and 13 seconds faster than the corresponding races last October. Pirelli's improved tyre technology is impressive.

In race one, third and fourth places were taken by Ten Kate Honda’s Jonathan Rea (some seven seconds behind) and Carlos Checa (Althea Ducati), only half a second behind Rea.

Race two was much closer with the first four around one second apart and this after some 160km of racing. Sterilgarda Yamaha’s Cal Crutchlow was third and Carlos Checa was again fourth.

The overall standing see Leon Haslam leading the Championship with 85 points. Max Biaggi is second with 69 points and Carlos Checa third with 60.

The next round will be held in Valencia on April 11 and we are looking forward to it with great anticipation!
